Making of a magnet

How do you turn powder into a magnet? See the making of our first material sample in the travelling trophy.

For this material sample in the travelling trophy, the process starts with grinding iron and strontium powders. The powders are measured, mixed, and pressed into shape using several tons of pressure.

Afterwards, the pressed powder is heated. This changes the material’s structure and forms the final magnetic phase.

Now only the magnetization is left to turn the pellet into a small permanent magnet. This shows how choosing the right materials and processing steps can turn simple starting materials into a functional material.

About the trophy

The AU Materials travelling trophy is awarded for the best poster at the AU Materials poster session, where PhD students and postdocs from across the university present their research.
